Accessibility Statement

Accessibility Commitment

At Truman Boot Co., we are committed to ensuring accessibility for all our customers, including those with disabilities. We strive to make our website and services inclusive, user-friendly, and compliant with applicable accessibility standards.

We treat accessibility as an ongoing engineering and content effort, not a one-time project. We test our website with automated tools, manual keyboard navigation, and screen reader spot-checks, and we make corrections as issues are identified.

Accessibility Standards

Our website is designed to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. These guidelines are recognized globally as the benchmark for web accessibility, focusing on creating content that is perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust:

  • Perceivable — Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive
  • Operable — User interface components and navigation must be operable
  • Understandable — Information and the operation of user interface must be understandable
  • Robust — Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies

Recent Improvements

Last updated: June 1, 2026

We have recently completed an accessibility audit and remediation pass covering our theme code and site content. Improvements deployed include:

Navigation & focus

  • Visible keyboard focus indicators on every interactive element (using the modern :focus-visible pattern)
  • A working "Skip to main content" link at the top of every page
  • The Sort By dropdown on collection pages now updates the grid in place without reloading the page, so keyboard focus stays on the dropdown and the user's context is preserved
  • Off-screen slides in carousels are no longer reachable by Tab, preventing screen-reader users from being announced "hidden" content
  • Mobile and desktop navigation icons meet the 44 × 44 pixel touch-target recommendation

Screen reader support

  • Site logo, footer logo, social-media icons, share buttons, pagination controls, breadcrumbs, and image-based feature links all have descriptive accessible names
  • Newsletter signup inputs have associated labels, required-field announcements, and proper autocomplete attributes
  • Modal dialogs (cart drawer, mobile menu, popups) use proper role="dialog" semantics with focus trapping and keyboard dismissal
  • Repeated calls-to-action ("Shop Now", "Learn More") include the surrounding block context in their accessible name so a screen-reader user can tell similar links apart
  • All external links that open in a new window or tab now announce "(opens in a new window)" to assistive technology
  • Browser-native tooltip attributes (title="…") have been removed from hundreds of navigation, content, and product links because they cannot be dismissed or controlled by keyboard or screen-reader users

Forms

  • The contact form, customer login, customer registration, address forms, newsletter signup, and product variant selectors all have explicit labels and appropriate autocomplete attributes
  • Required fields are programmatically marked and visually indicated

Page structure

  • Every page renders exactly one <h1> heading; subsequent headings follow a logical hierarchy
  • Heading-level skips in articles, related-products sections, and content pages have been corrected
  • A visually-hidden <h1> is automatically added on pages that would otherwise lack one, ensuring screen-reader users always have a page title to land on

Images & media

  • Alt text has been added or improved on product gallery images, blog post images, and theme-customizer image blocks
  • Embedded YouTube and Vimeo videos include descriptive iframe titles
  • Background and decorative images are correctly marked as presentational

Motion & contrast

  • Animations and slideshow auto-advance now respect the operating system's "Reduce motion" preference
  • Color contrast has been improved on product tags and other small-text elements to meet or exceed WCAG AA ratios

Newsletter popup

  • The newsletter signup popup now triggers on "exit intent" on desktop and after 45 seconds of inactivity on mobile / tablet, rather than interrupting active reading
  • A non-popup signup option is permanently available in our website footer
  • When the popup is dismissed, keyboard focus returns to the page element the user was on before it appeared

Known Limitations

We are transparent about accessibility gaps where they exist. As of the date of this statement, we are aware of the following:

Third-party scripts. Our website uses third-party services for spam protection (Shopify CAPTCHA), customer reviews (Judge.me), customer loyalty (Rivo), and analytics. Some of these third-party scripts emit accessibility-scanner warnings (for example, "session timeout" or "form auto-submit on focus") that do not reflect actual user-facing behavior — there is no genuine session timeout, and the forms do not submit on focus. We have raised the relevant tickets with each vendor and will adopt their accessibility-improved versions as they become available.

Newsletter popup (WCAG 3.2.5 Level AAA). Our newsletter signup popup is triggered by exit intent on desktop and by 45 seconds of inactivity on mobile devices, rather than by an explicit user click. Any timing- or behavior-triggered popup will not fully satisfy WCAG 3.2.5 (Level AAA, Change on Request). We have selected the least-disruptive available triggers, and offer a non-popup signup pathway in the site footer for users who prefer not to interact with the popup.

Content authored by editors. A small number of older blog posts and rich-text content pages may contain content (such as inline links with title= attributes added by the Shopify rich-text editor) that has not yet been individually reviewed. Our theme includes a script that removes these attributes at page load so they do not affect real users; we are also working through older content to clean the source.

Embedded marketing form. Our standalone "Factory Friday Sign-up" page uses a Mailchimp-embedded form whose markup we do not directly control. Users who prefer a fully-accessible alternative can subscribe via the newsletter form in our website footer.

We recognize that accessibility is never "finished" and are committed to continuous improvement.

Testing & Verification

Our accessibility work is verified using:

  • Lighthouse automated audits (target accessibility score ≥ 95)
  • Manual keyboard-only navigation through critical purchase flows
  • Periodic screen-reader spot-checks (VoiceOver on macOS / iOS, NVDA on Windows)
  • Color-contrast verification on key UI components

We recheck after each significant theme or content change.

🚧 Known Accessibility Issues (in Progress)

Latest update as of 06/01/2026

As of the date of this statement, we are aware of the following accessibility issues on our website:

  • Detected session timeout without prior warning. Users may lose data or progress when the session expires.
  • Form or form element automatically submits when focused, without explicit user action.
  • Important data submission lacks confirmation dialogue or verification step.
  • Content structure and relationships are presented visually but not coded in ways accessible technologies can understand.
  • Content structure and relationships are presented visually but not coded in ways accessible technologies can understand.
  • Content structure and relationships are presented visually but not coded in ways accessible technologies can understand.

We recognize the importance of addressing these issues and are continuously working to improve the accessibility of our website. Enhancing accessibility is an ongoing process, and we are committed to making gradual improvements over time to provide a more inclusive experience for all users.
